West Side Stories

On February 14, 2009, members of Woodland Presbyterian Church and Paw Creek Presbyterian Church gathered together due to the efforts of Karen Sisk and Madge Hopkins to share stories of the churches to commemorate Paw Creek's 200th Anniversary. African-American members from Paw Creek organized Woodland Presbyterian Church a few miles away on Rhyne Road in 1868.

With the help of Willis Cox, Karen Sisk had begun looking for unmarked graves of the slaves. It became obvious that the graves needed to be properly marked and the slaves should be recognized with a memorial. Woodland became an important part of this journey of discovery and healing within and between the two churches.
